The Design of Eixample, Barcelona
In the late 1800s, the Eixample district of Barcelona went through a huge design overhaul. With visionary designer Ildefons Cerdà at the helm, the area was divided up into hundreds of octagonal blocks forming a grid design which allows for easy transport along the wide, bright streets. The design was inspired by various schools of architecture, one of which was the Modernista architects, and allows inhabitants to benefit from extensive sunlight, improved ventilation and wide variety of green, public spaces.
